Twinning-related enhancement in strength and ductility of Cu-37Zn alloy by the cryogenic ultrasonic impact treatment supplemented with ECAP

The effects of ultrasonic impact treatment (UIT) and UIT with equal channel angular pressing (ECAP), on the microstructure Cu37Zn alloy are studied at ambient cryogenic temperatures. With decreasing process temperature, highly twinned areas submicro/nano-scale thickness/spacing, together dislocation tangles/cells, introduced in alloy. Direct microscopy observation stored energy release analysis confirm enhanced twinnings cryo-UIT cryo-UIT/ECAP treated that simultaneously provide superior Vickers hardness formability (twinning-induced plasticity effect).
